Mill Creek Edge House

The location of this house on the edge of Millcreek ravine with parkland to its north side was key to the arrangement of spaces, the placement of windows, and use of outdoor space. The street end has a large studio over a garage and entry. The living end contains a 12 foot high living space with a glazed wall angled to a view of trees and ravine without other buildings in sight. The house seems to be alone in a forest even though the river and downtown Edmonton are only minutes away. The master bedroom sits above this space with an outdoor terrace stretching across the house. Air and water heating are supplied by geothermal wells, and a high efficiency wood burner. Basement and main floors are concrete with radiant heating. Air conditioning is unnecessary. The exterior materials are fibre-cement panels and acrylic sheets, both with rain screen application.

Completed summer 2006.
