Rossdale House

A 1900 square foot house on a 33' x 100' lot in Rossdale. The plan is fairly conventional and constrained by the tight boundaries of the lot. But the materials, form, and windows express the owners' desire for simplicity and light afforded by uncluttered contemporary design. Morning sun brightens the kitchen at the rear. The dining room, with a 12 foot ceiling, faces west, and the open stair case in the centre allows natural light to flow through front to back. The red brick panel on the front facade is a nod to the historical character of the neighbourhood, and contrasts with the dark stucco and galvanized steel siding. The brick is also used on an interior wall near the high window as a solar heat sink. The heating system is geothermal, and both the basement and main floors are heated concrete. The high efficiency wood heater and the furniture add to the modern airy feel of the house.
