214 House

This is a rural project designed for a twenty acre parcel of pasture with a high knoll at its east end. There are trees and bush to the south and open vista to the west and north, but also exposure to weather. The clients wish to site the house here, but to orient it south in favour of solar gain over better views. The grade of the small hill is used to create a walk-out lower level with large windows. The L-shape allows west facing but protected windows in the dining and kitchen areas. Super-insulated walls with minimal openings to the north will ensure minimal heat loss while the large south tri-pane windows and concrete floors will absorb and store solar heat. Two balconies, at the main and second levels, are designed for enjoying the air and views as well as shading the windows in summer. Steel roofing will reflect the sun's heat in summer. The exterior finish will be fibre-cement board and batten, combined with acrylic stucco. There are three bedrooms, two baths, and laundry on the upper level, and open living space with a den and full bathroom on the main floor. The total area is 2284 square feet.
